(USCHIE 6/1/2011) US-China Healthcare Information Exchange (USCHIE, http://www.uschie.org) was officially launched in May 2010 as a non-profit, English and Chinese bilingual free e-journal and interactive platform. USCHIE’s mission is to facilitate the healthcare information exchange between US and China and to promote positive social and economic changes through our readers and participants. It is an independent extension of
the Association of Minnesota Chinese Physicians (AMCP) in collaboration with US and Chinese medical establishments and related industries to meet the increasing demand for healthcare and related information exchange between US and China.
In its first year of existence, USCHIE has developed into a multi-featured information exchange and interactive platform with quarterly keynote articles, weekly medical exchange news and daily healthcare news updates. It also has established Readers’ Contribution Section and Resident and Fellow Section with more to come in the future. On last count, USCHIE had tens of thousands spontaneous visits from 74 countries and over 2100 real name individual subscribers. The first year also saw exponential growth both in the USCHIE visits and subscribers. There are 5 USCHIE miniblogs in China that transmit USCHIE information to over 13,000 readers daily. Articles and information carried on USCHIE have been cited or redistributed with acknowledgement by many Chinese and US media including some reputed official Chinese journals. More and more interested readers are beginning to participate in the discussions of featured topics. Even more importantly, more and more volunteers both in US and China have joined USCHIE’s editorial office in helping translate articles and news information to facilitate their distribution to USCHIE readers. USCHIE has formed an Editorial Board of dedicated editors and support staff and also established an Advisory Board of distinguished experts who advise on its further development.
The 1st USCHIE Advisory Board meeting was held through GoToMeeting on May 25, 2011 at 7:30 PM US Central Standard Time. More than 10 Advisory Board members from both US and China attended the meeting. Dr. Hongsheng Guo, AMCP President and Park Nicollet Cardiologist Consultant, gave a brief introduction of the Association of Minnesota Chinese Physicians (AMCP). Ms. Joan Brzezinski, Interim Director of China Center and Director of Confucius Institute at University of Minnesota, gave a presentation introducing China Center and Confucius Institute and their China connections. Dr. Chao He, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital (SRRSH) President and USCHIE Associate Chief Editor, gave an introduction of SRRSH and its collaboration with USCHIE. Dr. Jiyao Wang, Chair of Department of Medicine at Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University, Associate Chief Editor of Frontiers of Medicine and USCHIE Associate Chief Editor, gave a presentation on Frontiers of Medicine and her organizations’ collaboration with USCHIE. Mr. Donald Gerhard, former President and CEO of LifeScience Alley, introduced LifeScience Alley, the largest US trade association of medical device and life science companies and provided advices to USCHIE from his unique perspective. Dr. John Chen, USCHIE Editor-in-Chief, gave an update on USCHIE’s 1st year’s rapid growth and accomplishment and its future plans as well as the challenges it faces. There were lively open discussions among the attendees after the presentations. Dr. He proposed to establish a China Office for USCHIE at SRRSH and he will discuss with other SRRSH leaders to help fund the operation cost of USCHIE and provide IT support. Many attendees thought that was a great idea, especially considering the flagship role played by SRRSH in the hospital reform in China. Both Mr. Gerhard and Ms. Brzezinski agreed that such a development would be helpful for USCHIE to obtain additional funding from other funding sources in the US. AMCP founding president Dr. Steven Shu brought up the question of the work burden of USCHIE being bilingual and questioned about the need of such a feature. Dr. Chen pointed out that although currently the information flow was mostly from US to China he would expect that there will be more information flow from China to US as USCHIE continues to catch attention from both US and China. In fact, the journal Frontiers of Medicine of which Dr. Jiyao Wang is an associate chief editor is just one of the windows for outsiders to look into the current status of academic medicine in China. The increasing number of USCHIE volunteers has largely alleviated the translation burden. In the long run, the bilingual feature will probably prove to be very useful in making USCHIE more inclusive in the healthcare information exchange. Dr. Kenneth Liu stated that his clinic and residency program at Michigan State University would do anything possible to support USCHIE’s mission. Dr. David McFadden of Mayo Clinic will also introduce the Mayo Visiting Physician Program in the future. Everyone agrees that the meeting was productive and successful.
